A new “Green Team” in Southeastern Wisconsin

September 18, 2012

By Annie Reifsnyder, AYP Area Coordinator

On Saturday, September 15th the Milwaukee Brewers took on the New York Mets.  Two teams battled: driving home runs, making double plays, all while the fans cheered.  However, in the parking lot before the game a new team was meeting each other for the first time.  Fifteen CCI parents, exchange students, and local coordinators gathered to help clean up the Hank Aaron State Trail in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources, Keeping Milwaukee Beautiful, and the Milwaukee Brewers “Green Team.”

The Hank Aaron State trail named after the Brewers baseball legend is ten miles of protected wetlands and forests.  The stretch CCI’s newest greenhearts Maruf from Tajikistan, Injien from Nigeria, Aygerim from Kazakhstan, Laura from Germany, Chaewon from South Korea, and Theresa from Germany cleaned is often littered by tailgaters.  Hence, the Brewers “Green Team” which picks up litter and educates fans about tailgating responsibly.

After clearing trash near the ballpark and learning about the Keeping Milwaukee Beautiful Foundation the new team tailgated responsibly themselves before seeing the Brewers beat the Mets 9-6.  Fun was had, friends were made, all with helping the environment in mind.  Perhaps the highlight of the event was former exchange students Anh and Liz from Vietnam speaking with the current exchange students.  They spoke about volunteering, lessons learned from American high schools, and the possibilities of returning to the United States for college.

This is our first event of nine planned throughout the year – so stay tuned.  Volunteering is such an easy way to bring everyone together and are rather easy to plan.  Get together with families, fellow local coordinators, and most importantly let your exchange students be a resource for each other.  This team is on its way to a winning season and its great to have CCI and Greenheart there to help coach.
