Happy Greenheart Holidays from Wisconsin!
By Katie Stephens, Greenheart Club Intern
Local coordinator, Anne Reifsnyder, and her students, Aygerim, Yomna, Marufjon, Chaewon, Izabella, Laura, and Injien, helped out this past weekend with an annual craft fair at the Cedarburg Senior Center. This fair is partnered with the not-for-profit organization Portal, Inc., an agency “that has been in continuous operation serving adult citizens with developmental disabilities since 1965.”
The students helped with various activities such as selling cookies, different crafts and they helped attract participants to the fair. The students split up into teams and rotated these jobs throughout the day and even distributed flyers in town as their way of attracting participants. Since this was one of the main fundraising events for Portal, Inc. the students were very much appreciated and this is what Marlene Morgan, Development Director of the organization, had to say about the project:
Hi Annie,
A special thanks to your group for helping with Portal’s cookie sale fund raiser and assisting the Cedarburg Senior Center with promoting the event. All the students were a delight. I enjoyed meeting each one of them and talking with them about their experiences here and sharing information on Portal and who we serve. Thanks also for the group photo and sharing the video. Loved the video! I hope everyone had a good time. Happy Holidays!
After a day of learning about the mission of Portal, Inc. and volunteering, the students spent some time bonding at the bowling alley afterward. This craft fair was not only a great way to welcome the holiday season and spread some cheer, but give back to the South Eastern Wisconsin community in a meaningful way.
Be sure to check out the video that Anne created about the project!
